My last ode was to Casa Ole. It's been too long, so I have several to share.
An ode to...
...DSW (free and cheap):
DSW stands for Discount Shoe Warehouse or Designer Shoe Warehouse. Not sure which, but either way it's fantastic. They have all sorts of fancy discounted designer shoes. And they always have a huge clearance rack in the back--which is where I shop. If you have the drive and the patience--we're talking Nine West, Steve Madden, and Kenneth Cole for $10! I made a pilgrimmage there today and bought 5 pairs for under $100. Then I remembered that I've been woefully negligent in updating the Infamous Shoe List. So I went though all my shoes today and updated, adding pictures of the ones I bought today. The grand total now stands at 99. Before my dad blows a gasket--I didn't actually pay for any shoes, I had gift certificates from my birthday.
...Half-price Book Store (cheap):
This one is self-explanatory--it's all in the name. The best feeling in the world? Finding a 40 year old copy of an Agatha Christie book that's 50 cents...and only having to pay 25 cents.
...summer weather in January (free):
How great has the weather been? I don't think I've touched my winter clothes.
...my iTrip (neither free nor really cheap, but it gets an ode anyway):
I LOVE this thing. Barbara gave it to me for Christmas. It's a tiny little thing you plug into your iPod, and it transmits to your radio (stereo, car, anywhere!) It is SO cool. It's like having your own personal radio station in the car. I wanted to drive around randomly in my car just to play with it.
...grades coming out on time (free):
The professors have until January 17(!) to turn in grades, but 4 of the 5 came out today, the first day any grades could be available! I'm very happy overall (though I reserve judgment and don't want to jinx the one grade I don't have yet). While I was driving randomly playing with the iTrip, I actually did a little dance in my car when it hit me that my grades really are pretty good. One semester down...5 semesters, one summer abroad, 2 internships and 1 job search to go!

Scratch the summer abroad and increase the internship by 1.
I did start to blow a gasket until I saw the words gift certificate. You know me well. Re: Re: Odes to things that are free or cheap

I will not scratch the summer abroad. I missed Europe in college, and I'm not making that mistake again. Besides, I'll work the first half of the summer.
Life is a journey, not a destination. I'm not interested in how many dollars I have at the finish line...I'm interested in how I spent them along the way :) Re: Re: Re: Odes to things that are free or cheap

1. You've been to Europe twice now.
2. Everything you make working the first part of the summer will be used (or more) to finance the trip to Europe the second part of the summer. You need to save that money for tuition or living expenses so you have to borrow less. Re: Re: Re: Re: Odes to things that are free or cheap

Every single person at school who's gone before says it's the chance of a lifetime. The money will work itself out. It always does. I'm a gamblin' kind of girl; I'll take the risk :)

You aren't a poor working slob. You're just fiscally conservative. You have a talent with money. I'm a risk-taker. Things always seem to work out in the end, and this is definitely something I'm willing to gamble on.

You think you had it bad. I'm a Texas A&M fan who was forced to root for Texas. How uncivilized.

YIPPIE!! on the grades - is now when i get to say "i told you so?" or does that have to wait for the last one?
Also, to put one foot in daddy's camp and one foot in yours - some law firms have offices abroad that you can go to for 1/2 your summer (typically 2L summer) so i would look into that along w/ going abroad (you can do it during the semester too). oh, and btw - i so need to send you some postage money so you can send me my dress! otherwise it will live in san antonio forever... or at least until you move... Working abroad would be amazing, but I don't think those type of firms really make it to interview at St. Mary's. I think that's an experience reserved for your NYU types ;) Not that I wouldn't take it if the opportunity arose...
It shouldn't cost very much to send the dress--you don't need to send me money. I'm pretty sure it'll fit in a flat rate Priority Mail box which is under $4. If you'll send me your address, I'll get it in the mail. Re: Re: Re: Odes to things that are free or cheap

Joi stayed with me the night we went to see the Zilker Musical and left a dress there.

I want an iTrip, but the PX (Post Exchange) always runs out. The cheap little tape adapter they did have isn't cutting it. Guess I just need to unclench my purse and go to a German electronics store.
Darn you, Apple, for not shipping to APO addresses! Trackbacks
